Dear First Grader,

I am holding a monarch caterpillar, which will be waiting for you in school next Wednesday when you come for your first day of first grade. We are going to study monarch

butterflies and you will get to watch a monarch egg hatch into a caterpillar and then turn into a beautiful butterfly. We will take field trips to UMass and Magic Wings butterfly museum to learn more about insects. When we are done studying monarchs we will let our butterflies fly south to Mexico and we will have a big parade and party to celebrate their release. I love studying about monarchs and I think you will too!

I am looking forward to seeing you next Wednesday so we can get to know each other and you can start learning many new and exciting things. First grade will be lots of fun and filled with surprises!

Well, I have to go back out to the milkweed field to find more eggs and caterpillars for you. See you soon!

Sincerely,

Mr. Lipman
