From the Principal:

Mark your calendar!  The Pelham Parent Curriculum Night will be on Wednesday, September 24, 2008 for all grades.  We have tried to divide up the teacher presentations to provide as few overlaps as possible for families.  Physical education, music and art teachers will be in their respective areas and feel free to visit these areas during the evening.  Special education and other specialist staff will be in the classroom areas.  Here is the schedule for the night:

                                    Class Presentations--Grades K, 1, & 2              7:00 - 7:20 PM

                                    Class Presentations--Grades 3 & 4                   7:20 - 7:40 PM

                                    Class Presentations--Grades 5, & 6                  7:40 - 8:00 PM

This is a parent/guardian only event, a time when teachers share with you important information about their classrooms and their curriculum.  This fall meeting gives teachers a time to discuss the units they will teach during the year, classroom routines and procedures, and general information parents need to help their children at home.  If you have a question about homework, the reading program, or health units, this is the time to ask your child’s teacher about them.  Also, most teachers will have a sign up sheet for parent conferences.  Teachers will begin their classroom presentations promptly at the time on the above schedule.  We hope to see all of you there!  Our goal is 100% parent participation at this important and informative event.  Please call the school office by September 22 if you will need childcare; a $5.00/child donation is suggested.

I have attached a copy of the district CORI form.  We encourage all parents to volunteer in their child’s class; however, under state and federal law, you must pass a CORI check to volunteer in the classroom.  If you would like to volunteer in your child’s class or drive on a field trip, you will need to fill out the CORI form.  If you have to pass a CORI for another school in the district or if you filled out a CORI form at Pelham School last year, you do not have to fill out a new one.  You must bring the CORI form to the school office along with a photo ID.  If you have any question, please call the school office (253-3595).                                                                                                         Rena Moore

Pelham School Phone Book

Each year the Pelham Parent Council distributes a phone book for Pelham students.  Please call the school office (253-3595) by September 17 if you do not want your name or number included in this phone book.  If your name, address, or phone number was incorrect in last year’s phone book, please let us know.  Also, let us know if you would like a second copy of the phone book.   We are also thinking of adding email addresses to the phone book.  Please let us know your

From Margaret Light:  I am delighted to be working at Pelham School as the new 6th grade teacher. Many of you know me from years of working part-time at the school and in the library, and as a Pelham parent from 1996-2007. My classroom teaching career began in 1988 at the middle school level. After my three sons were born, I juggled graduate school and various part-time jobs, including substitute teaching and working in remedial programs at the elementary and high school levels. I started working at Pelham School in 2000, and over the years have substituted in every grade, phys. ed., art, After School, and the library. Two years ago I was hired for two long term sub positions in the 5th and 6th grades and enjoyed those experiences so much, I decided to return to full-time teaching. I am honored to be working in such a fine school and am doing my best to ensure that your child will have as rich an experience as mine did at Pelham School.

Take a Hike . . .

. . . this Saturday, September 13 right here in Pelham.  Sponsored by the Pelham Historical Society, this walking and driving trip will take you to three fascinating burying grounds off Packardville Road: Allen Cemetery in the Cadwell Forest, Steven's Cemetery with what is called a "Monk's Cave" and Knight's Corner Cemetery with its infamous Poison Oyster Stone.  The group will leave from the United Church of  Pelham's parking lot at 1:00 p.m.  Call Bruce Klotz, the walk's leader, at 253-1601 to learn more.

. . . but before you take the second hike, come to the Pelham Historical Society meeting on this coming Monday, September 15 to learn about some great places to walk and learn in Pelham.  At the program, you'll find out about the people who lived on discontinued Robinson and Brewer Roads, and you'll also find out where to find the cellar holes of their houses.  You'll also learn about the sites of the quarry that provided foundation stones for many original UMass buildings and of a one-room schoolhouse.  Then, you'll be ready to take a hike!  The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Ramsdell Room of the Community Center of Pelham.  For more information: Barbara Jenkins, 253-2929.

String and Band Programs:  Over the next week, Laurie Rabut, String and Orchestra Teacher, and Juli Holmes Sansoucy, our Band Instrument Teacher, will meet with new students in the upper grades to tell them about these music programs at Pelham.  They will also have additional forms for any other students who may want to sign up for orchestra or band.  If you would like more information, please contact the school office (253-3595). If you are unable to buy or rent an instrument, the school has some available to loan.

Make Sure You Child Doesn't Get Left Inside

The Berkshire Chapter of the Appalachian Mountain Club is starting up hikes and other events to get kids outdoors. Our first outing will be  a short hike at Buffam Falls in Pelham on Saturday, Sept. 27.

The goal is to have at least one kid-friendly event every month of the year. Possibilities include scavenger hunts, building fairy houses, and letter boxing. Anyone interested in attending family events or helping with the program can contact Nancy Weld, Family Programs chair at (413) 256-8728 or at

familyprograms@amcberkshire.org.

The Sept. 27 event will be a short   hike at a slow pace, with plenty of opportunity to throw rocks and sticks into the water and explore nature. We may get a snack, lunch or ice cream afterward. We’ll start at 10 a.m.

Our second event, on Oct. 12, will be a hike up Rattlesnake Knob which is a smaller peak just east of Mount Norwottuck, part of the Holyoke Range in Amherst. We will meet at 10 a.m. and may gather for lunch afterward.

Contact Leader Nancy Weld for more information (413) 256-8728 or at
